Review: Twitter

“I don’t get it.”

Twitter has been a social networking site that has been garnering more and more attention as of late. This website allows you to update your status, notifying your contacts via text message or IM whatever status message you post. You can also create a widget for your blog or webpage that will post your current status.

The benefits- From a pure marketing standpoint the only real benefit I see to this website is that if you have a large database of contacts, you can use this to send a blast out to them via IM or e-mail, whichever their preferred device is. You can import your e-mail list into their software and gain access to your customers IM or Cell phone information, without them having to give it up. Just one more way to get your message out to a current or potential customer.

On a personal level it can be a one stop shop in getting contact with all your friends or business contacts, if you want to share the same message.

The drawbacks- That is it… It doesn’t really offer any features beyond that. It is like taking your status message in facebook and sending it out via different mediums. The site isn’t feature rich and while I do see some positive applications for what it does I wouldn’t invest a lot of time using this as a marketing strategy.

Overall- I don’t see the point of the site, does anyone really care that I am out grocery shopping on Tuesday evening? Sure there are some business applications that you can use this for but in all honesty it seems to be a quirky, geeky, and pointless toy that a few tech people might think is fun.

Morally this is in a grey area, you are taking advantage of using an e-mail address that was willfully submitted to be able to contact people on another platform, which while some may appreciate it, others might feel it is an invasion of their privacy.
